Big News! Moby would pass in the Ancienne Belgique during his tour in Europe. Quite a big name for a location that can hold (only) 2000-2300 people. Apparently, the IT department of the AB had underestimated Moby’s popularity, or maybe they overestimated their ticketing systems.

Comments on the site are clear: tickets were sold out less then half an hour after the tickets sales started. People were understandably very cross to get that message after trying to reach the reservation page every minute, but consistently getting the message that the maximum number of concurrent users had been reached. It’s small consolation that the system remained stable for the others due to your inability to get access and buy tickets.

This can be seen as a selling situation for Cloud Computing, where processing capacity can be added at the moment of need. AB won’t expand their servers for the remote probability that another big name like Moby will play in the near future, it’s just not cost effective.

A stinging detail: even before all tickets were sold out (within the first 30 minutes) tickets were already available on eBay, at 10 times the original price.

One of the easiest ways to learn a language isto use it actively. I’m used to doing that by reading a publication in the language I’m studying at that time. While I was following the German course, I was frequently in the IMS store buying the german C’t magazine. I tried Der Spiegel, but the heavy language couldn’t really motivate me to read on. With a computer magazine, that problem didn’t really exist.

At the moment I’m following an English conversation course, which means we talk a lot. For that, my subscription to The Economist comes in handy. Earlier, I used to read Business Week, but a few years back publisher McGraw-Hill decided to stop the publication of the European and Asian print editions, and following that it became a bit too US-centric for my tastes. Hence my switch to The Economist, where the editors succeed in providing a balanced overview of what happened in the world, even without regional editions. Sadly, at least one of the editors is a convinced euro-sceptic, which translates itself in a column blowing up some parts of european politics out of proportion and making fun of ut.

The perfect magazine doesn’t exist, that’s true. To my great surprise, I saw today that The Economist is offering an Audio Edition since a few weeks. Gone are the days when only best-selling autors were distributed on a multitude of audio cd’s, enabling the people stuck in trafic to follow the adventures of Harry Potter or Dan Brown. Op 1 juni 2008 stierf wereldberoemd mode-ontwerper Yves Saint Laurent in zijn huis in Parijs. Samen met zijn zaken- en levenspartner Pierre Bergé had Yves Saint Laurent tijdens zijn leven een vereniging opgezet om de historie te bewaren van het modebedrijf dat zijn naam droeg, “The Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent Foundation“. Naast het hoofddoel hield de foundation zich ook bezig met het organiseren van tentoonstellingen. Daartoe had het een mooie collectie uitgebouwd, die unaniem geprezen werd doordat het een veelzijdige collectie was, die er toch in slaagde van een zekere eenheid te behouden. Het was met andere woorden geen allegaartje van zoveel mogelijk samengeraapte kunstwerken, maar er zat samenhang in. Om die reden had Abu Dhabi naar verluidt een bod gedaan op de hele collectie, maar Pierre Bergé had dat afgewezen.

In de Vlaamse media was het redelijk uitgesmeerd (op z’n minst De Morgen en het Nieuwsblad vermeldden het) dat een gedeelte van de collectie zou worden verkocht. Volgens the Economist is het de bedoeling om de activiteiten van de foundation verder te blijven financieren met de opbrengst van de verkoop van de niet-YSL gerelateerde kunstwerken. Hetzelfde artikel in The Economist laat uitschijnen dat de verkoop één van de belangrijkste zou zijn in zijn genre. Hoewel de verkoop doorgaat in het Grand Palais in Parijs, de bakermat van het Yves Saint Laurent imperium, heeft Pierre Bergé een kunstgalerij in Brussel, op de Grote Zavel. Grote hoeveelheden snoepgoed, de kerstbomen die stilaan opduiken in de huizen, een heel leger van chocoladen sinterklaasfiguurtjes, jengelende kinderen en lange wachtrijen aan de kassa van elke winkel die ook maar iets met amusement te maken heeft. Dat zijn allemaal duidelijk ingrediënten van de sinterklaasperiode.

De kerstman en Halloween beginnen aan zijn populariteit te knagen, maar op 6 december, zijn eigen dag, is de oude man zo te zien nog op zijn hoogtepunt. Ik heb nog geen blijde intrede van de kerstman gezien of zo. Daar heeft ie nog wat werk aan, wil hij de heilige man uit Spanje van de troon stoten.

Onze beste sinterklaaswensen aan iedereen. Snoep maar eens goed, dit is het beste excuus dat er zal zijn om je eens te laten gaan tot aan de eindejaarsfeesten!

Na lang wikken en wegen ben ik dan toch bezweken voor de charmes van een nieuwe pc. Spijtig genoeg bestaat in België niet de kans om rechtstreeks bij HP of Asus een pc op maat te bestellen, zoals dat in de VS wel bestaat. Even heb ik getwijfeld of ik geen iMac zou aanschaffen, maar het recent aangekochte scherm zou dan op slag overbodig worden, en dat vond ik zonde. Nu gebruik ik vooral software die zowel op windows, mac als linux beschikbaar is, dus een Mac zou voor mij nog geen onoverkomelijk probleem geweest zijn. Alleen, als je er een zonder scherm wil moet je al naar de professionele machines overstappen, en daar kwam mijn bankrekening wat tegen in opstand. Read the rest of this entry »

Ik heb al een tijdje zitten zoeken naar een gemakkelijke manier om ons blog dat draait op WordPress te linken naar mijn Facebook pagina. Dan zien de mensen via Facebook ook wat er hier zo allemaal wordt geschreven. Moet ik het niet honderd keer herhalen .

Ik gebruik Wordbook, voor zij die geïnteresseerd zouden zijn in hetzelfde.

I was looking at Vostro desktops this evening on the Dell site (I’m living in Belgium), and I had a look at the Vostro 410. The fact that it has Quad-core processor support in the series interested me. However, when I was trying to put a system together to have a look at the price, I had to look twice when I came at the choice of graphics card: Dell offers you standard the Radeon 3650 HD included in the price, with the Geforce 8800GT available for … €44.134. And the ATI Radeon 3450 HD (the slower version of the included 3650 HD) for ‘only’ €44.344.

I knew that graphics cards can sometimes cost more than an entire system, but this is a bit too much if you ask me
